Hi, I'm Vanessa.
Textile artist and nostalgic entrepreneur.
Born and raised in Northern Ontario, I’m the quintessential cottage baby! I’ve always been a creative person.
My family has worked with textiles for generations, being sewers, weavers, quilters, knitters, felters, basket weavers and now, a natural dyer.
I discovered the art of natural dyeing with organic indigo during the pandemic. Like many, discovering a creative outlet helped me to cope. As a Frontline Healthcare worker, the suffering witnessed and the isolation felt during the Pandemic left me longing for better days.
My textile artwork is rooted in my connection to this place, this land. Inspired by memories of sitting on the dock, dipping my toes creating ripples in the calm waters and the peaceful feeling experienced when the lake is so calm it mirrors the shoreline and the loon calls.
It’s also rooted in the desire to gather with loved ones, and I think that the best way to do this is with food! Simple textiles can become part of a shared experience, creating memories, from preparation, to table and then to clean-up.
In my natural dyeing practice, I work primarily with organic indigo, the Earth's blue. I have successfully grown Japanese Indigo persicaria tinctoria in my zone 2-3 garden from my own seeds for the past 4 years.
As was done in ancient times, my mentor Britt Boles encouraged us to connect color to place. I’ve named the pigment extracted from my plants ‘Northern Claybelt Blue’.

Thank you
